Professional Learning

Turn Classroom Learning Into Real-World Experience.

CIS interns have opportunities to strengthen client assessment and case-management skills while learning alongside experienced Site Coordinators. Interns may also support special events, campus activities, and approved program responsibilities.

Academic Eligibility

Undergraduate & Graduate Students

Internship opportunities are available to students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs, subject to program needs and placement availability.

What to Know Before You Apply

Internship opportunities vary from year to year based on program needs and placement availability.

Academic-Year Placement

Internships are offered beginning approximately mid-August through the end of May.

Unpaid Internship

CIS internship placements are non-paid educational experiences.

No Summer Internships

The internship program does not offer summer placements.

Campus-Based Experience

Intern placements may be available at CIS-supported campuses depending on capacity.

Placement Requests

CIS will work to accommodate placement requests when possible.

Hours Vary

Internship hours vary depending on campus placement and university program requirements.

Internship Experience

Learn Alongside CIS Professionals

Gain Hands-On Experience Supporting Students

Interns may develop and improve client assessment and case-management skills while shadowing a professional CIS Site Coordinator. Depending on placement and program needs, interns may assist with case-management file setup and maintenance, participate in organizational events, and support approved campus activities such as student groups.

Before Placement

Requirements & Qualifications

Internship candidates must complete the required materials and satisfy CIS, university, and school district expectations before beginning a placement.

  • Internship Application
  • Current Resume
  • Proof of Liability Insurance provided by the university or college
  • Drug Test paid for by the intern or university
  • School District Background Check
  • Signed CIS Confidentiality Notice and Agreement
  • Intern Information Sheet & Checklist

The Ideal Candidate

  • Believes in the mission of Communities In Schools
  • Has a positive attitude
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Is enrolled in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Counseling, or a related degree program
  • Has experience and/or interest in working with diverse and underserved populations
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail
  • Is willing to learn and assist where needed
  • Can take initiative, manage multiple tasks, and work efficiently
Before Reporting to Campus

Internship Onboarding

Approved interns must complete required documentation and screening before beginning their campus placement.

Submit Required Materials

Provide the internship application, resume, proof of liability insurance, and other required documentation.

Complete Screening

Complete the required drug test and school district background check before placement begins.

Complete Confidentiality Forms

After the other required information has been provided, complete the CIS Confidentiality Notice and Agreement before reporting to campus.

Student Privacy

Confidentiality Is a Core Responsibility

Interns may encounter confidential information related to CIS students and program participants. All interns are expected to follow CIS confidentiality and privacy requirements and protect student information in accordance with applicable policies.

Technology & Social Media Expectations

  • Follow all applicable school district social media guidelines and policies.
  • Follow CIS guidelines and policies regarding the use of technology.
  • Do not share student or client information.
  • Use appropriate professional judgment regarding information shared about faculty, field agencies, instructors, peers, coworkers, employers, and internship experiences.

Current CIS Employees: Communities In Schools does not offer internship placements to individuals who are actively employed by CIS during the time of the internship.
